The premises was in a conservation area, so planning permission had to be submitted for any external changes such as the outdoor signage and lighting, remaining mindful of local requirements. The initial plans required some alterations, but permission was later granted to proceed. The project was also completed in stages in order to keep the practice open throughout. This created a massive challenge in that work had to be performed while patients were in the building. Mehdi and his team did decide to delay any treatment that required sedation during this time ¬¬– the last thing anxious patients needed was background noise and a change in routine!
Another challenge they faced was that of budget. The old building required significantly more alterations than initially anticipated, with a lot of new wiring and tubing required. Increased costs were therefore unavoidable and factored into the long-term plan accordingly.
The project had to be managed very carefully in order to overcome these challenges and achieve everything that Mehdi set out to do. The staff room was moved into the attic so the old space could be converted into a new surgery and consultation area. The upstairs area was completed with a staff changing room and kitchen facilities, before attention moved down to the surgery to ensure minimal disruption to, and maximum comfort for, the team.
