Ashley Berrow is Lecturer & Course co-ordinator in Dental Technology at Sheffield City College which offers several dentistry courses including the new two year, full time, BTech Extended Diploma.
The Dental Laboratory was part of the major £61million Sheffield City College campus development on the former site of Granville College, and was purpose built by Tavom . After years working with what he describes as “a mish mash” of units from previous campus sites, the chance to start from scratch meant that Ashley could work closely with Tavom and their lab specialists at John Winter to create exactly what was needed.
“The main requirement was for student space so they have a good and clear view of the demonstration area. We visited a technical trade show in Coventry before we committed to buying and were impressed with Tavom’s ergonomic design, the work surfaces, the fact that micro-motors, air and extraction systems are all fully integral. Good lighting is also really important for students so Tavom was ideal in every way and we liked the cabinetry finish.”
The laboratory also has a separate area for ceramic work which can be kept clean easily, and there is also a fully fitted plaster room where students can work on metal casting and polishing .
The work was completed in a matter of weeks and Ashley has nothing but praise for Tavom, “ They were very easy to work with and any problems were dealt with straight away. The whole project couldn’t have been better and it’s made such a difference to teaching because students can see the demo area much more clearly. It’s been like moving from a Ford to a Rolls Royce and I’d recommend Tavom to anyone. The only thing I’d like is a larger lab!”
